asking your advice

i am shamelessly sitting on my couch waiting for work to give me a call and tell me to go ahead and have the night off. yesterday i was told i was sure to be free, but now 16 minutes past the time i should have heard from them by my chances are looking bleak.

with the thought of employment on the mind i have something to ask of my readers.

i know the weekend is slow for the blog world. especially a holiday weekend, but I hope that you all find this before Tuesday.

I was finally called back by a job i applied for a few weeks ago. Or maybe it was months.. I scored an interview for Tuesday afternoon. They want, like most potential employers, extra copies of my resume and writing samples.

The problem I am having is that none of my writing samples seem relevant to the prospective job. what to do? Do I write new samples, give them the old and irrelevant ones, or ask for a prompt?

i know there are some writers out there who read my blog, so help a sister out. Or all you geniuses could just give me your samples ;) i kid, i kid.

I would maybe write one or two new samples and bring in one or two of your old samples that are your favourite. Make sure you know WHY they're your favourite so you can tell them how even though they don't relate to their company they will still show off your writing skills!

Good luck!

I'm not experienced in this regard, but I would think the most important thing is that your samples are good representations of your skills and written personality, even if irrelevant to the job.

Maybe you can mention that these are samples you have and you also welcome the opportunity to write given a prompt?

I also like Amber's advice.

Good luck on your interview, and I hope you get the night off!

i don't know that i can offer any advice about writing samples. i could draw you some pictures to take, but i don't know how much that would help :o)

if you need a second opinion on outfit choices, though, let me know!

good luck!

I would try and whip up something more 'relevant' to their company but I think Amber also had some really great advice-Simply explain to them why your favorites are your favorites, and why you think they showcase your talents. Because you ARE talented.

Good luck. :)

I presume that they asked your samples to see your writing skills, not necessarily the content. In that case you should be ok with submitting your current samples.
